Efficiency of solvent extraction depends on the extractant. Therefore, a superior extractant is vital to effective extraction and separation by solvent extraction. Recently, we developed a N,N-dioctyldiglycolamic acid (DODGAA) with an amide group and a carboxy group connected by an ether chain. DODGAA has a simple molecular structure, but can show the excellent extraction performance for various metal ions. In this study, we investigated the effect of each functional group in the diglycolamic acid (DGAA)-type extractant on the extraction performance. To evaluate the effect of amide group, ether chain, and acid group, we synthesized some DODGAA analogous extractants, and compared the extraction properties between the DODGAA and the analogous extractants.

Liquid-liquid extraction is one of the most effective separation methods based on the distribution of solutes between two immiscible solvents. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely investigated as novel alternatives to conventional organic solvents. Because ILs can act as liquid ion exchangers, not only neutral species but also positively or negatively charged species can be extracted into the IL. In this study, the extraction behavior of lanthanoids(III) in the IL [Cmim][TfN] system with an anionic chelating ligand (Htta) in the presence of a hydrophobic neutral ligand (TOPO) as a synergist has been investigated to demonstrate the specificity and superiority of the IL extraction systems over conventional ones. It was revealed that the mutual separability of lanthanoids was remarkably enhanced by the synergistic effect.

Six years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power accident. However, the decontamination of the forest area remains almost untouched. To develop an effective decontamination method for Fukushima forest soils, we first devised the method to estimate radioactivity of Cs-137 accumulated in fungal mycelium through testing Cs-137 accumulation by about 1500 strains of fungi and then prepared a flat decontamination bag composed of nutrient media, the fungal mycelium with a high Cs-137 accumulation efficiency, and a mixture of zeolite, vermiculite and phlogopite. The decontamination bag accumulated Cs-137 from the contaminated soil in Fukushima forest. Without the minerals, the accumulated Cs-137 was released to the environment after the death of the mycelium. By the addition of the minerals, the Cs-137 in the mycelium was stably fixed by the minerals after the death of the mycelium.
